Bombastic FC “A” 2 – 0 YFC
Yaletown FC were unable to continue their unbeaten run this season by losing to Bombastic FC ”A” by 2 goals to nil. It was a warm Saturday sunny afternoon at China Creek Park, however the pitch conditions were never going to allow for a tidy game. From kick off, both sides battled it out in the midfield area and neither team was creating any real chances for themselves in what looked like a game where players were canceling each other out all over the field. YFC were attempting to adopt their typical passing game, however soon learned that the more effective way of creating chances would come from the long ball style of play. Mid way through the 1st half, YFC gave away a foul on the edge of the 16 yard box of which Bombastic capitalized with a well taken free kick and put away their first goal. YFC then stepped up the effort and created a few chances using the long ball method on the left hand side, however YFC’s forwards seemed to lake pace and be able to capitalize on the passes they received.
The second half began much the same way, with neither team being able to create real chances for themselves. YFC had made a decision at half time to focus on the long ball as much as possible, with Oleg Benesch being the target forward however this didn’t really cause any problems for the Bombastic defense. Oleg Benesch did put a few shots on goal, however they lacked pace and were easy for the Bombastic keeper to manage. As the 2nd half progressed things did open up and the YFC midfield were able to put more pressure on Bombastic, however again a poor showing from the YFC strikers mean’t no real opportunities were created. Bombastics 2nd goal came from an incidence of scrappy play in the YFC box, with a midfielder picking up a clearance, then cutting into the box running through the central defenders and placing it past the YFC keeper. Bombastic did have a spell of about 10 minutes whereby they put constant pressure on YFC however some great saves by Brad Bodenhammer kept the scoreline respectable.
With 20 minutes to play YFC continued to play the ball around the field and were beginning to gain the edge on a tiring Bombastic side, creating a few chances for themselves in the 16 yeard area, however again were unable to put any shots away on target. At this stage both teams made substitutions. Dan Ranking was taken off with a mild concussion replaced by Chris Bland at the back and Peter Rosling was replaced at right back by Minoru Echizenya. Bombastic also made some changes in their midfield to re-energize their attack. This was a game that had few chances for both sides and the winners simply on the day wanted it more than the traveling YFC squad.
