YFC 2 – 1 Unicorns FC

2009 is here and it brought the gift of goals! What a wonderful display of football YFC put on last Saturday! An afternoon suffocated by dense fog (so much so that at times you couldn’t see the opposite end of the pitch) and going down 1-0 to a tough tackling Unicorns FC made for quite the battale. This match had it all, players were at each others throats, passing was crisp at times, tackling was tough, goals were flying in and great team spirit was on display. Today was certainly a day to be proud of being associated with Yaletown Football Club.

The match began with both teams waging war on the fog soaked battlefield around the center circle, strong challenges were a dime a dozen and the Unicorns were certainly up for a game. They started well and were pressing effectively into the YFC half, with slightly less success going to the home side. A goal came about half-way through the stanza where their #9 got free of his mark and received a well placed ball through the YFC defense. He could only manage to hit the post with his effort though and a fortuitous rebound saw the ball skip right back to him where he nicked the other post to give his side the lead. YFC battled hard to end the half on a positive note, but couldn’t muster much of anything, 1-0 to the horn wielding hoofed-beasts.

The 2nd half kicked off much like the first, but gradually the Unicorns’ level clearly dropped and Yaletown began to impose themselves. About half-way though Arnie Emmerson took the match on his shoulders, receiving the ball about 30 yards from goal, weaving his way past bewildered Unicorn defenders to slot home within the 18. YFC got the boost they needed and completely controlled the rest of the game, culminating in a wonderful goal from Adam Jennings who after mopping up a ball from a corner, took it in stride and blasted home from 20 yards into the top left corner.

After that YFC shut it down, snuffing out any and all efforts they made to even the scoreline. In the end it was a well-deserved win, much needed and with some goals (emphasis on the plural) to go with it – something not achieved by this YFC side in a very long time.
