YFC 0 - 0 UBC Metro
On Friday evening YFC faced off against a vastly improved UBC Metro side who presented an entirely new challenge. Veterans of last season’s successful VMSL campaign will remember this UBC Metro side, who were in their first season in the league. They were young, inexperienced but had lots of potential. This season they have clearly been working hard to improve their side which now has strength all over the pitch and their position at the top of the division reflects it well.
From the opening kickoff UBC showed their blistering pace which stretched Yaletown to their limits throughout the match. The first half was actually more even than it seemed, with YFC playing a cautious game, mindful of not giving UBC’s speedsters space to run into. YFC had a few forays into the UBC third but never really registered anything dangerous, while UBC had one shot that went just over the bar. The half ended and the game was poised nicely for a tough second half.
The second half saw many defensive subs by YFC to alleviate some of the tired legs, a few chances here and there could have been converted on another day but all in all the connection between midfield and the forwards just wasn’t there. Much of the second half was spent defending as UBC took a firmer grasp on the match, this resulted in less possession, more clearances and not much for the YFC attack to work with. In the end, the draw was the right result as UBC had some chances but couldn’t convert while Yaletown defended valiantly all over the pitch to disrupt a very good attacking team.
Man of the Match went to Sherman Lai, whose absolutely vital play in net kept YFC in the game, particularly in a huge one on one moment which he snuffed out with authority. As always this season, thanks to the group of fans who cheered us on from the sideline, and cheers to Glyn Roberts for devising the game plan for a very difficult opponent.
